New Music Roundup 11.5.21

Okay. Hand up, I’ve been a bit of a piece of shit and haven’t had my eye on sports much more than scored and highlights the past couple days. I got really excited about the cowboy movie and went down that rabbit hole, and then I had real life stuff to do.

But this Friday, 3 artists that I’m quite a big fan of all put out new music, and as a musician, I figure I’d weigh in on them as best as I can. Without further ado.

Smokin’ Out The Window: Silk Sonic (Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars)

The third (fourth?) single off of the upcoming album “An Evening With Silk Sonic), Mars and .Paak continue their hot stretch with their most recent offering. A slower heartbreak song, taking a different tone than “Leave The Door Open” and especially ”Skate”, this new track checks every box that Silk Sonic has been elite at thus far. Blending strings with a tight backbeat on the drum kit with real horn stabs, this track furthers a belief that a mass drawing to this can be nothing but good. Both vocalists shine in their respective roles, as expected and has been consistent so far. The fact that people are starting to listen to music that sounds like this en masse in 2021 makes me very happy, and very very encouraged.

ESCAPE PLAN/MAFIA - SINGLE: Travis Scott

So even though the notion of two “singles“ being released in little packages doesn’t make any god damn sense, and defeats the purpose of the word single, when we get two good ones, it’s hard to be upset. Travis Scott of course took direct inspiration for this pair of singles (not gonna let it go) from the infamous and false “Bat Boy“ front page news story for their art. ESCAPE PLAN takes a lot of La Flame aspects we‘re used to and enjoy. A fairly straightforward minor progression with an engaging vocal sample, he has you hooked on every breath for the brief 2:20. MAFIA feels like one of those songs that you play late at night with your boys, when you’re passing around the smoking apparatus. The fading audio that exists in both “mono” and “stereo“ a little less than halfway through is a real highlight and reward for having good headphones. Fans of Travis wont be disappointed with these two.

The Chapeltown Rag: Slipknot

God Slipknot rules. They’re absolutely one of those bands you’d catch a ricochet shot for being a fan of a decade ago (and I did), but at this point there’s no denying their impact on their genre and their prolific release and touring schedule.

Their most recent offering, “The Chapeltown Rag“, feele like a return to early form for a band whose fans weigh that part of their career heavily. There are some straight up death metal and blast beat moments that kick so much ass. I saw these guys a couple years ago and it’s going to be a great memory for many years to come.

enjoy all three of these tracks, and have a nice weekend. Going to give myself the weekend off for my streak, unless I have something I need to say tomorrow.
